Sebastian Wieczorek is Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Zenno Astronautics, the New Zealand-born company pioneering high-temperature superconducting magnetic systems for space. Since co-founding Zenno in Auckland in 2017, he has led the development of the company’s flagship technology—the Z01 Supertorquer—the world’s first commercial superconducting magnetic actuator to be successfully operated in orbit.
Zenno’s systems generate precise, fuel-free torque by interacting with Earth’s magnetic field, offering a lighter, lower-power alternative to traditional reaction wheels and chemical propulsion. The result is longer satellite lifetimes, greater design flexibility, and a foundation for more advanced orbital capabilities such as formation flying, close-proximity operations, and future radiation shielding.
Following the successful on-orbit demonstration of the Z01, Zenno is now commercializing the technology and expanding its presence in the United States while continuing to push the boundaries of what superconducting systems can enable in space.

In this expert chat with Sebastian, we discuss:
00:12 – Intro, background & founding Zenno
5:07 – Why is the commercial space sector only now ready for superconducting magnetic systems, and what fundamental advantages do they offer over traditional reaction wheels, torque rods, and chemical propulsion?
9:09 – What superconductors are and what superconducting is
11:13 – How does the Z01 actually generate usable torque in orbit, and in which mission profiles does it most clearly extend satellite life or free up mass and power compared with conventional systems?
14:10 – What have the biggest engineering and operational lessons been from flying superconducting magnets in space?
15:40 – how do fuel-free superconducting systems change the infrastructure requirements and economics of sustainable orbital operations?
18:27 – Looking past pure attitude control, which of the broader applications—radiation shielding, formation flight, close-proximity operations, or in-orbit assembly—are nearest to practical demonstration, and what new capabilities do they unlock?
22:22 – Looking three to five years ahead, what does success look like for Zenno, and if superconducting magnetic systems become foundational rather than niche, how does that reshape the orbital economy?
26:30 – What’s new with Sebastian and Zenno Astronautics?
